How things have changed in such a small amount of time…
Já passaram 3 anos desde que passámos por Seul quando regressávamos da nossa viagem de missão de 1 ano no Palau. Como o tempo voa… Durante esse tempo, não havia pandemias ou a possibilidade de uma Terceira Guerra Mundial. O Mundo estava aparentemente em paz e todos estavam maioritariamente preocupados com a sua vida diária. Como as coisas mudaram em tão pouco tempo…
This post is about the hours that we stayed in Seoul and how amazing that experience was, not only because of the city but also, because of the people. Let’s start from the beginning…

We left Palau in the morning and arrived in Seoul a couple of hours later. It was our first layover, and we planned to stay the night there, so we could visit the city and do some sightseeing. I had booked a cheap room in the middle of the city, but finding the hotel was an adventure. Basically, because we didn’t have internet on our phones, we couldn’t use any app to help us. We only had the Hotel name and a print screen of the location of where the hotel was supposed to be.
Saímos do Palau de manhã e chegámos a Seul umas horas mais tarde. Foi a nossa primeira paragem, e planeámos passar lá a noite, para podermos visitar a cidade e fazer algumas visitas turísticas. Eu tinha reservado um quarto barato no meio da cidade, mas encontrar o hotel foi uma aventura. Basicamente, porque não tínhamos internet nos nossos telemóveis, não podíamos usar nenhuma aplicação para nos ajudar. Tínhamos apenas o nome do hotel e um print screen do local onde o hotel deveria estar.
We managed to arrive at the correct place because we aren’t that bad at navigating without GPS, but there was a problem… The Hotel was nowhere to be found. So we were just two tourists, in the middle of the sidewalk, looking at the phone and looking everywhere, trying to find the Hotel. If this happened in most countries in Europe, no one would even look twice at us, but there… Not one, but two gentlemen, around the age of 45 to 50, stopped to ask us if we needed help. The funny part is that none of them spoke English, and we surely didn’t speak Korean.
Conseguimos chegar ao sítio certo porque não somos assim tão maus a navegar sem GPS, mas houve um problema… O Hotel não estava em lado nenhum. Imaginem, éramos apenas dois turistas, no meio da calçada, a olhar para o telefone e a procurar em todo o lado, tentando encontrar o Hotel. Se isto acontecesse na maioria dos países da Europa, ninguém olharia sequer duas vezes para nós, mas lá… Não um, mas dois senhores, por volta dos 45 aos 50 anos, pararam para nos perguntar se precisávamos de ajuda. A parte engraçada é que nenhum deles falava inglês, e nós certamente não falávamos coreano.
After trying to communicate for a few minutes, by showing them the name of the Hotel and a new language (ahahahah), we found it. The entrance was hidden in an alley and that was why it was so difficult to find… Nevertheless, the experience of having two random strangers just stopping their daily lives to help some tourists was something very strange to us. Somehow, we felt cared for, and they showed us what being a Christian means, even not being one. What a lesson!
Após tentarmos comunicar durante alguns minutos, mostrando-lhes o nome do Hotel e uma linguagem (ahahahah), encontrámos o hotel. A entrada estava escondida num beco e foi por isso que foi tão difícil de encontrar. No entanto, a experiência de ter dois estranhos aleatórios a parar a sua vida diária para ajudar alguns turistas foi algo muito estranho para nós. De alguma forma, sentimo-nos bem tratados, e eles mostraram-nos o que significa ser cristão, mesmo não o sendo. Que lição!
After we checked the small hotel room, which was very nice by the way, we set out to go sightseeing. I tried to look up the best places to visit, on the internet, and off we went. We started with the N Seoul Tower. If you don’t know, Seoul has a huge mountain/park in the middle of the city, and on top of it, it has the N Seoul Tower. We took the Namsan Cable Car to the top, although you can do it on foot if you have time and energy for it. We didn’t!
Depois de verificarmos o pequeno quarto de hotel, que, a propósito era muito agradável, partimos para ir visitar. Tentei procurar os melhores locais para ver, na Internet, e lá fomos nós. Começámos com a Torre de N Seul. Se não sabes, Seul tem uma enorme montanha/parque no meio da cidade, e em cima dela, tem a Torre N Seul. Apanhamos o teleférico Namsan até ao topo, embora o possas fazer a pé se tiveres o tempo e energia para isso. Nós não o fizemos!
We believed that we wouldn’t return there for a long time, so we paid to go to the top of the tower that has the best view, totally worth it. We enjoyed the sunset over the city, the awakening of all the lights and nightlife of the city. No doubt an awesome experience that everyone should try if they have the opportunity. By the way, don’t forget to use the bathroom on the top of the tower, there’s always a huge line of people… but that’s because it’s one of the places where tourists take more pictures, and you will love to do it too!
Acreditávamos que não voltaríamos lá durante muito tempo, por isso pagámos para ir ao topo da torre que tem a melhor vista, o que vale totalmente a pena. Aproveitamos o pôr-do-sol sobre a cidade, o despertar de todas as luzes e vida noturna da cidade. Sem dúvida uma experiência fantástica que todos devem tentar se tiverem oportunidade. A propósito, não te esqueças de usar a casa de banho no topo da torre, há sempre uma enorme fila de pessoas… mas isso é porque é um dos lugares onde os turistas tiram mais fotografias, e também vais adorar fazê-lo!
After we got back to the city, we went to do some sightseeing, and one of the amazing things that we experienced was the fact that we passed through streets packed with people that were “organized”. How can a street like that be organized? Well, just let me say that everyone walks on the right side, almost like there were implicit rules that everyone respects. But it’s not only in the streets, it’s everywhere. The subway, the traffic, the whole society, everyone is fully synchronized like a well-trained dance group.
Depois de regressarmos à cidade, fomos fazer alguns passeios turísticos, e uma das coisas espantosas que experimentámos foi o facto de termos passado por ruas repletas de pessoas que estavam “organizadas”. Como pode uma rua como essa ser organizada? Bem, deixem-me apenas dizer que todos andam do lado direito, quase como se houvesse regras implícitas que todos respeitam. Mas não é só na rua, é em todo o lado. NO metro, no trânsito, toda a sociedade, todos estão totalmente sincronizados como um grupo de dança bem treinado.
This organization is also visible in the public bathrooms (ahahahah) because all the ones that we went, had electric toilets (those with the water jet and hot air that you only find in high-level hotels in Europe). What a difference if we compare all these things to any Western city… And we say that we are civilized!
Esta organização é também visível nas casas de banho públicas (ahahahah) porque todas as que fomos, tinham sanitas eléctricas (aquelas com jacto de água e ar quente que só se encontram em hotéis de alto nível na Europa). Que diferença se compararmos todas estas coisas com qualquer cidade ocidental… E dizemos que somos civilizados!
The next day, we visit the city’s major temple, which was awesome, and we also visited the military museum, which was also a great experience. I could spend a lot of time talking about all the small details that we experienced in such a small amount of time. These few hours were something that made such an impact on me and on my wife, and we hope that in the future God allows us to work in a similar culture, not because of the organization but because we saw how beautiful that people were, and it was sad to see how far away they still are of knowing a loving and compassive God.
No dia seguinte, visitámos o maior templo da cidade, o que foi espetacular, e visitámos também o museu militar, o que foi também uma grande experiência. Poderia passar muito tempo a falar de todos os pequenos detalhes que experimentámos em tão pouco tempo. Estas poucas horas foram algo que causou tanto impacto em mim e na minha esposa, e esperamos que no futuro Deus nos permita trabalhar numa cultura semelhante, não por causa da organização, mas porque vimos o quão bonitas as pessoas eram, e foi triste ver como ainda estão tão longe de conhecer um Deus amoroso e compassivo.
The God of the Bible is a God of love and order since creation. To be able to explain this to such a culture could be something that would create a bridge that maybe could allow some of these people to come to know Him, not as a foreign god, but as the creator and sustainer of all.
O Deus da Bíblia é um Deus de amor e ordem desde a criação. Conseguir explicar isto a uma tal cultura poderia ser algo que criaria uma ponte que talvez permitisse a algumas destas pessoas conhecê-lo, não como um deus estrangeiro, mas como o criador e sustentador de todos.
To conclude, our few hours in Korea were an experience that we’ll never forget and that we hope we can repeat. Not only as tourists but as someone that can take a message of the eternal gospel to that region of the world. We hope and pray, that wherever you are and whoever you are, you may have the same hope and feeling.
Para concluir, as nossas poucas horas na Coreia foram uma experiência que nunca esqueceremos e esperamos poder repetir. Não apenas como turistas, mas como alguém que pode levar uma mensagem de evangelho eterno a essa região do mundo. Nós desejamos e oramos, para que onde quer que estejas e, quem quer que sejas, possas ter o mesmo desejo e sentimento.
